Organist James Welch will perform Dec. 15 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saratoga. Welch, who is the university organist and a lecturer in music at Santa Clara University, will offer a program of music ranging from Baroque to contemporary. Performing on Immanuel Lutheran's Casavant organ, he will also include Christmas carols, playing both familiar tunes and lesser-known works by Bay Area composers.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors. Children will be admitted free. A reception will follow in Amundson Hall at the church.
Welch received his doctor of musical arts degree in organ at Stanford University, where he studied with Herbert Nanney. He has also studied in Austria and France and has taught at UC-Santa Barbara. In addition to performing throughout Europe, South America and Asia, he has collected and published two volumes of organ music by Mexican composers and received a Fulbright award to research historical organs in Brazil. He serves as dean of the Palo Alto Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is organist at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Palo Alto.
