Falcons open with win

Aaron Marlage tossed in 15 points and Tom Calderon supported with 13 to lead the Saratoga boys' basketball team to a season-opening 69-37 win over Mountain View.

The Falcons couldn't have started the season off much better. They outscored the Spartans 18-0 in the first period and led 37-11 at the break. Saratoga topped Mountain View 18-5 in the third quarter and coasted from there to the victory in the nonleague game.

McCleary third in cross country finals

Jackie McCleary of West Valley College romped to a third-place finish at the Community College State cross country finals held recently in Fresno. McCleary covered the 3-mile course in 18:39, 15 seconds behind the leader.

McCleary had finished third in the Northern California Invitational a week earlier, running 18:30 at Crystal Springs in Belmont. Teammate Mona Leon was second in 19:04 to lead West Valley to a team second behind Shasta.

Softball signups

The Los Gatos-Saratoga Girls' Softball Association is holding signups for the 1996 spring season. Signups will be for 8-and-under, 10-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under girls' fast pitch softball teams.

Saratoga Pony-Colt baseballsignups

The Saratoga Pony-Colt baseball league is holding signups for the 1996 spring season. The Pony division is open to players ages 13-14 and the Colt division is for boys 15-16 (ages as of July 31, 1996).

Little League signups

The Saratoga Little League is holding signups for the 1996 baseball and girls' softball season. New players must provide a birth certificate, and all players must be at least 5-years-old by July 31, 1996, to be eligible.
