    Signups, camps for baseball and softball players

    It may be beginning to look a lot like Christmas everywhere you go, but for youngsters throughout the area it's also beginning to look a lot like the time to get ready for the spring baseball and softball season. Area leagues have already held signup sessions and are looking for players for the 2000 season.

    Girls softball--For more information about the 2000 softball season for girls living in Los Gatos and Saratoga, call Cindy Battaglia at 408.354.1176.

    Saratoga Little League--The league is open to boys and girls ages 5-12 (as of July 30, 2000). For information, call 408.970.6222.

    Saratoga Pony-Colt--Pony baseball is for players ages 13-14 and Colt is open to players ages 15-16. For information, call 408.867.5170.

    Quito Little League--The league is open to boys and girls ages 5-12 (as of July 31, 2000). Players from parts of Campbell, Los Gatos and Saratoga are eligible for the league. Call 408.943.4707 or contact the league's Web site at www.quitoll.org for more information.

    PAL baseball--The San Jose PAL is accepting signups for the 2000 season for players ages 7-12. New players must provide a birth certificate. For more information, call Officer Kevin White at 408.272.9725, ext. 102.

    Stanford Baseball Camp

    He was one of the finest baseball players the Santa Clara Valley has produced.

    And now Mark O'Brien is giving something back to the community as he hosts the annual Stanford baseball camps for players ages 12-18 on the Stanford campus.

    The camps will feature hitting and defense, with a special camp for pitchers ages 13-18. Camps will be held Dec. 20-22 and Dec. 27-29 at Sunken Diamond, and the cost is $110 per session.

    O'Brien starred on the diamond at St. Francis High School before going to on excel at both De Anza Community College and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He later coached at each college before taking a position as an assistant coach at Stanford. O'Brien was the first base coach for the Cardinal team that competed in the NCAA World Series last spring.

    Pitching Program

    An eight-week fall pitching program for baseball players ages 9-12 will run Tuesday evenings, through Dec. 14, in the gym at West Valley Community College in Saratoga.

    The program teaches fundamentals, arm care and defensive skills. Players 9-10 attend at 7 p.m., players 11-12 at 8 p.m.
