Residents can call for special election

Saratoga residents have 30 days to petition the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters to hold a special election to replace Saratoga Union School District board trustee Jill Hunter. Hunter resigned last month in protest at the board's decision to cut down several eucalyptus trees on Saratoga School's property.

The remaining members of the board voted Nov. 24 to appoint Stan Perry to the vacant position. Perry's appointment will stand, and he will serve until the regularly scheduled election in November 2000, if no one files a petition for a special election.

Perry campaigned for a seat on the board, but lost to Aileen Kao by only 62 votes in the November election. Perry has 10 years' experience as a teacher, and has been active in the schools through involvement in the Foothill School Site Council, as the coordinator of the Foothill Technology Committee and as a member of the Business Alliance Team and the Bond Finance Committee to fund the Measure D Campaign.

Council, commission meetings moved

All Saratoga City Council and Planning Commission meetings for the month of December will be moved from the Civic Theater--which also serves as council chambers--to the Adult Care Center of the city's community center on Allendale Avenue.

City staffers say the move is temporary while changes are made to the theater's lighting system. Saratoga Recreation Department director Joan Pisani said the installation of a whole new lighting system for the theater is scheduled to be completed by Jan. 8 at the latest, and is being paid for by theater ticket surcharge funds.

Rotary still looking for donations

Members of the Saratoga Rotary Club are seeking donations from the public to help Honduran victims of Hurricane Mitch. Contributions of children's clothing, household goods--including pots, pans and bedding--building materials, tents, hammers, saws, plywood and shovels are all needed, and can be dropped off at the Saratoga Fire Department.

Rotarians hope to fill a 40-cubic-yard container. Residents are asked to bring donations in boxes instead of bags.
