Humane Society holds blanket, towel drive

The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley has begun a drive this holiday season to collect bedding materials for the stray or abandoned dogs and cats for which it provides a temporary home. The animals, often frightened or confused, enjoy the warmth, security and comfort that a warm blanket or fluffy towel provides. Donations may be dropped off at the shelter, 2530 Lafayette St., Santa Clara. The HSSCV is an independent, nonprofit organization that does not receive funding from any national humane organizations. The largest animal shelter on the West Coast, it has a 91 percent adoption rate for its animals. Call 727-3383 ext. 854.

Vivaldi's Four Seasons plays at West Valley

West Valley College's Collegian Musicum chamber orchestra performs the Four Seasons by Vivaldi on Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. The 25-piece orchestra, under the direction of Ron Dotson, also features nine soloists. Poems projected onto a screen above the orchestra accompany each of the four segments. The choice of the Four Seasons reflects the many changes West Valley College has undergone over the years leading up to its 35th anniversary.

The performance takes place in the College Theater. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 general admission and $5 for seniors and students. For more information, call 974-2045 ext. 3157.

Foster grandparent program seeks senior citizens

Men, women or couples over the age of 60 are invited to participate in the Foster Grandparent Program facilitated by Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. People of all beliefs are welcome. The program pairs children with special needs--physical, mental, emotional or social--with local seniors who can give them love and attention and provide a different perspective on life.

Participating seniors should be in good physical health, have good English skills and be on a limited retirement income. Foster grandparents receive a small, non-taxable stipend and other benefits. For information, call 325-5206.
