IOOF Home changes name

The Odd Fellows Home of California in Saratoga changes its name to the Saratoga Retirement Community, effective Jan. 1.

The name change reflects the fact that the home, operated by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, has been open to the public for years, said Executive Administrator Charles Gascoigne.

"What I like about the new name is it says who we are, what we do and where we're at," Gascoigne said. "We're a retirement community in the city of Saratoga. We identify with Saratoga."

The IOOF Home, at 14500 Fruitvale Avenue, has been a Saratoga landmark since it was built in 1912, originally to house aging Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. Membership in those organizations is no longer a requirement for residency.

The Saratoga Retirement Community includes a residential facility offering independent and assisted living and the Health Center, which offers skilled nursing. It occupies 37 acres.
