Memorial is set for Mark Bingham

A special memorial celebration for Mark Bingham will be held at the Redwood Estates Community Club on Dec. 15 at 4:30 p.m.

Bingham, the son of part-time Saratoga resident Alice Hoglan and the nephew of Saratogans Vaughn and Kathy Hoglan, died in the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11.

He and other passengers are credited with thwarting another major terrorist strike by storming the hijacked cockpit of the airplane and bringing it down in an open field south of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Bingham lived in Redwood Estates while attending Los Gatos High School. He studied at West Valley College for one semester before transferring to UC-Berkeley.

On Dec. 15, family and community members will dedicate a flagpole and an engraved granite bench in Bingham's honor.

    Green Valley will expand recycling

Green Valley Disposal Company could be Saratoga's recycler for the next six years, and the group might make the city even greener. With the current contract set to expire in February 2003, the West Valley Solid Waste Management Authority--representing Saratoga, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Campbell--is discussing re-signing with Green Valley through early 2007.

Under the new contract, Green Valley would pick up plastics numbered 1 through 7 and plastic grocery bags, while processing construction debris at the Guadalupe Landfill for no extra cost. Saratoga city officials have also urged the waste management authority to adopt a battery recycling program that would be implemented at the cost of about 11 cents per household per month.

    City discussing swap with inn

Kwan Lee, the proprietor of the Inn at Saratoga, has suggested that the city and the inn swap 17 parking spaces in their adjoining lots fronting Saratoga Creek.

Lee says that patrons of Wildwood Park use his hotel's lot for parking, instead of the city lot a few hundred feet west of the inn.

The city will explore the swap in coming months through a public hearing process.
