New building holds interest of new library commissioner

    By Kara Chalmers

Donald Johnson became the newest member of the city's library commission on Nov. 1.

Johnson is also a member of the citizen's oversight committee for the $15 million bond measure voters passed last March to renovate and expand the Saratoga Community Library. As part of that committee, Johnson is responsible for seeing that the bond money is spent wisely and that the project stays within budget, he said.

"It's strictly a watchdog job," he said.

After working as a technical consultant for the aerospace and defense company, Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, for 36 years, and on the building committee for a new parish office for his church, the Church of the Ascension, Johnson said he had experience relevant to the library project. Johnson, now retired, said when the seats on the library commission opened up, he applied since he was really interested in the building project.

The library commission's December meeting was Johnson's first as a commissioner. Johnson is also a member of the Saratoga Good Government Group.
