Cohen, Cone lead Falcons to Del Mar soccer title

Cohen named most valuable player in the tournament

    By Dick Sparrer

Jenni Cohen and Jessica Cone combined for nine goals in four games to lead the Saratoga girls soccer team to a championship in the Del Mar Tournament last week.

Cone scored two goals to lift the Falcons to a tight 2-1 win over Monta Vista in the championship game last weekend, but only after Cohen had pumped in three goals in a win over Prospect in the semifinals.

Cohen was selected the tournament's most valuable player after an impressive performance, and she was joined on the all-tourney list by teammates Cone, Keala Meyer and Mary Moran.

The Falcons opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over powerful Leigh. The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie after a half, but Cohen scored off an assist from Erin Marsh, then Cone added an insurance goal.

The Falcons lost 2-1 to Lynbrook despite a goal by Cone off a Meyer assist, but Saratoga still managed to advance to the semifinals against Prospect.

Cohen scored three goals, all off assists from Moran, and Cone turned a Cohen assist into a goal to lift the Falcons to a 4-4 tie with the Panthers. Saratoga ended up winning the game in the shootout to advance to the finals.

Shani Armstrong scored three goals for the Panthers and Natalie Kiyama added one. The two Prospect players also made the all-tourney squad.

Cone scored two goals, one off an assist from Marsh, to help the Falcons to the title-clinching win. Cone scored a goal in each half, easily offsetting the second-half goal scored by the Matadors.

The tournament showing helped the Falcons improve their record to 5-2-1 for the year.

Prospect's girls fought Lincoln to a 1-1 tie in the third-place game. Armstrong scored off a Marlyn Radevic assist to account for the only goal for the Panthers.

The Saratoga boys soccer team, meanwhile, stretched its season record to 2-3-1 with a tie and two losses last week.

The Falcons fought Los Gatos to a 1-1 tie to open the week. Ryan Patterson scored off a Jonathan Shih assist in the first half, but the Cats scored in the second half to knot the score.

Saratoga dropped a 2-1 decision to Leland later in the week. Michael Teng scored off a Bryan Kim assist in the first half, but Leland scored goals in each half to claim the win.

The Falcons were pounded 5-0 by Saratoga in the Homestead Christmas Cup tournament last weekend.
