Grocery shopping for a good cause

Volunteers with reliable cars and some extra hours each week are needed to buy groceries and other staple items for homebound individuals in the community who find it difficult to shop for themselves. This free service is run by local volunteers, churches and synagogues in partnership with Gene's Fine Foods on Cox Avenue. Days and times are flexible. Recreation Dept. holds two Winter Wonderland camps

The Saratoga Recreation Department invites all children between the ages of 312 and 10 to attend one of its annual holiday vacation day camps: Winter Wonderland I or II. Children have the opportunity to do arts and crafts projects, sing their favorite camp songs, bake goodies, socialize and play games.

Camp I meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 21, 22 and 23. Fee is $69 for residents, $79 for non-residents. Camp II meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 28 and 29. Fee is $59 for residents, $69 for non-residents. Space is limited. Call 868-1248 or 868-1249 for more information.

News commentator Andrei Codrescu speaks in series

Andrei Codrescu, an award-winning news commentator and author from Romania, presents "Whose Words are These: Notes of an Alien Son," on Jan. 14 as part of an ongoing lecture series sponsored by the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning.

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road in Saratoga. Codrescu is a regular contributor to National Public Radio, and wrote and starred in the Peabody Award-winning movie Road Scholar. In 1989, he returned to his home country of Romania to cover the collapse of communism for both NPR as well as ABC-TV's Nightline. He wrote Hole in the Flag to describe his experiences.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for those age 30 or younger. Babysitting is available with advance reservation. Tickets are available by calling 793-5190 and can also be purchased at the door.
