Saratoga NewsMusic Study Club sponsors competitionThe San Jose Music Study Club is now accepting applications for its 46th annual Young Artist Awards, a competition open to vocalists, pianists and instrumentalists well-versed in classical repertoire who are between the ages of 18 and 30. Auditions take place Feb. 7, 1999, at Foothill College in Los Altos. Applicants, who are responsible for bringing their own accompanist, must audition with a memorized piece. Applicants will also be asked to perform one of the other pieces listed in the repertoire they have written on their application forms. Each audition runs approximately 15 minutes. The San Jose Music Study Club suggests the following pieces as guidelines for inclusion in applicants' repertoires: * For vocalists: at least one operatic aria or oratorio; a selection from a German Lieder or French Chanson; an Italian or English Art Song; or a work by a contemporary composer. * For pianists: a work from the Baroque, Classical or Romantic Period, or a work from a contemporary composer * For instrumentalists: a portion of a sonata, a selection from the standard repertoire of the masters; or a composition by a contemporary composer. First, second and third place winners receive $700, $500 and $300 respectively, and will play in concert on April 21. Application deadline is Jan. 30.
