Saratoga NewsObituariesCatherine Butera Longtime Saratoga resident Catherine "Kathy" Butera died Nov. 4 at the age of 58. Born July 24, 1939, in San Jose, Butera attended San Jose State University and was head clerk for the former Buy & Save Market in downtown Saratoga, which her family owned and ran from the mid-1940s until 1987. She was an active member of the Saratoga Junior Women's Club and also enjoyed various arts and crafts. Survivors include mother Millie Butera of Saratoga; sisters Betty Toledo of Milpitas and Mary Mason of San Jose; niece and nephew Tina and Thomas Mason and grandniece and -nephew Kaila and Nicholas Echeverria. Memorial services have been held, with interment at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Donations may be made to a favorite charity. Sister Mary Kathleen Newell Sister Mary Kathleen Newell, O.P., who had been residing at Our Lady of Fatima Villa in Saratoga, died Nov. 9 at the age of 78. Born Catherine Nora Mary Newell on June 6, 1919, in Philadelphia, Pa., Sr. Newell was a member of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena in Kenosha, Wis., for 54 years. She was an elementary school teacher with a specialty in reading education and frequently volunteered for extra assignments to be with the children she loved teaching. Sr. Newell was also active in the pastoral ministry at Our Lady of Fatima Villa until this summer. She is survived by her sister, Sr. Margaret Newell, O.P., of Merced, and brother Thomas Newell of Philadelphia, Pa. Memorial services have been held, with interment at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara.
