Students sought for Olympiad

Student poets, artists, photographers, dancers and musicians attending high school or college in Santa Clara County are eligible to enter the annual Olympiad of the Arts competition.

Sponsored by the West Valley/Mission Colleges Foundation and supported by the Saratoga Rotary Art Show, the Olympiad has categories in acting performance, dance, vocal music, piano music, photography, poetry, short stories and visual arts. Its purpose is to encourage students' creativity by promoting and rewarding their excellence.

Various cash awards will be given. Entry deadlines vary depending upon the category. Receptions for artists, along with art displays , take place at various sites beginning in February. The main awards ceremony is May 3 in the West Valley College Theatre, in conjunction with the Saratoga Rotary Art Show. For more information, call Mary Fleischli or Robert Parker at 741-2066.

Schoolhouse Rock Live! is extended

The producers of Schoolhouse Rock Live! have extended their hit musical stage production with additional performances during the holidays and a later closing date of Jan. 4. The show takes place at the Alcazar Theatre, 650 Geary St. in San Francisco.

Saratoga resident Scott Guggenheim, the producer and director, is joined by wife Shannon Guggenheim as choreographer and brother Stephen Guggenheim as musical director. The trio was featured in the Oct. 15 Saratoga News.

The musical is based on the Emmy Award-winning educational series of animated snippets and features that aired from 1973 through 1985.

Tom Sawyer auditions set

The Saratoga Recreation Department and Festival Theater Ensemble will hold auditions for their production of Mark Twain's classic story Tom Sawyer on Jan. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Callbacks take place from 2 to 5 p.m. the same day.

There is a $75 participation fee for children and $40 fee for adults. Rehearsals are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, culminating in performances at the Saratoga Community Center March 20-28. Call 868-1248 or 868-1249.
