West Valley College reception honors first woman president

The West Valley-Mission Community College District and the West Valley Academic Senate co-sponsored a community reception Dec. 5 honoring Marchelle Fox, the first woman president of West Valley College. The well-attended event was also sponsored by the California State Employees Credit Union of San Jose. Members of the board of trustees attending included board president Arne Lunde and trustees Joy Atkins and Karin Dowdy.

Chancellor Rose Tseng praised the good work of Michael Rao, president of Mission College, and the achievements of Fox, mentioning her impressive credentials and experience.

Tseng also told how Fox has been working with board president Lunde "to gently and safely move our untamed small neighborhood creatures, the feral cats, to good homes." Fox has been urging faculty members to take a cat home.

Fox discussed West Valley's varied and exciting courses and suggested that people give certificates good for course units as gifts. In a drawing that took place, Realtor Rita Boren and Bella Saratoga owner Bill Cooper were among those who won free units toward classes. Tseng thinks it is great to go back to school and practices what she preaches. As busy as she is as chancellor, she is enjoying taking a night stretch class at West Valley College.

American Association of University Women members Marlene Duffin and JoAn Lambert commented later that they were pleased with the new president and were looking forward to working closely together with her as community members.
