Warriors finish third, Brown an all-tourney pick ... again
By Dick Sparrer
Jenny Brown earned a place on the all-tournament team when the Westmont girls basketball team finished third at the Pioneer-Glenn Ventura Classic to open the year.
Well, like Yogi Berra once said, "It's dejá vu all over again."
Because the Warriors finished third in another tournament last weekend, and Brown was back on the all-tourney team.
Brown, a 5-foot-6 senior point guard for the Warriors, was one of seven players picked to the all-tournament team at the Sandi Stober Classic at Lynbrook after Westmont clinched third place in the eight-team event.
The Warriors clinched third with a 35-21 win over Prospect in the final tourney game for the two clubs.
Suzanne Johnson led the way for the Panthers and joined Brown on the all-tournament team.
Westmont put together a balanced scoring attack and outscored Prospect in every period on the road to the third-place win.
Brown and freshman Rachel Gelman tossed in nine points apiece to share team-high honors for the Warriors, and Karly Brownridge pitched in eight points. Brown and Brownridge each popped three-pointers.
Shannon Stenzel supported with six points, Allyson Carrothers had two and Jennifer Chaney hit one.
Westmont had opened with a lopsided 56-29 win over Andrew Hill before losing in the semifinals to eventual tourney champ Harbor.
Stenzel had the hot hand in the opener for the Warriors, pouring in 16 points on eight field goals. Carrothers joined her in double figures with 12 points.
Brownridge chipped in with seven points, Rachelle Brady had six, Gelman and Ann Baumgardner four apiece, Brown three and Heather Rasmussen and Anna Maria Sul two each.
Like the Prospect game, Westmont outscored Hill in every period en route to the victory.
Prospect opened the tourney with a 31-14 over San Jose Academy, but lost 53-33 to Lynbrook in the semifinals. The Panthers are now 6-3 for the year.
Westmont improved to 5-2 and will be back on the tournament trail this weekend. The Warriors will take part in the Half Moon Bay Tournament Dec. 19-21.
Warriors pin wins
Westmont ran into a powerhouse in the first wrestling match of the year in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Warriors went head-on with league favorite Silver Creek and lost a lopsided 62-18 decision to the Warriors. It certainly didn't help, though, that Westmont forfeited in the first four weight classes.
On the mat, Westmont wrestlers won three of the 10 matches contested, all by fall.
Seniors John Bauman, Garreth Gorman and Tom Miller all pinned wins for the Warriors against the Raiders.
Gorman won by fall with 42 seconds left in the second period at 140 pounds, and Gorman pinned with 30 seconds left to wrestle at 171. Miller stuck his Silver Creek foe at 1:20 of the first round.
Westmont will be in action again this weekend when the Warriors head to Roseville for the Peterson Tournament.
Prospect, meanwhile, opened the year with a 57-12 win over Yerba Buena in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.
Tony Barba, Roger Meza and Pat Adamiak were among the winners for the Panthers in the team victory over the Warriors.
Warriors win
Brandon Sligh pumped in 23 points and Clay Tolbert added 15 to lead the Westmont boys basketball team to a comfortable 55-45 win over Leigh last week in non-league play.
The win helped the Warriors improve to 4-3 for the year.
