Woo leads Saratoga girls to second

    at Shirakawa Classic hoop tourney

    By Dick Sparrer

Karen Woo pitched in 31 points in the final two games of the Shirakawa Classic girls basketball tournament at Yerba Buena, but it was only enough to lead the Saratoga girls basketball team to a split and a second-place finish in the tourney.

Woo went for 19 points to lead the Falcons to a 51-45 win over Notre Dame of San Jose in the semifinals, but her 12 points weren't enough to pace the Falcons to a win over Gilroy in the tourney title test.

Woo tossed in four three-pointers to finish with the 12 points, but the Falcons lost a tough 49-44 decision to the Mustangs in the finals.

Saratoga and Gilroy locked up in a seesaw battle in the title game. The Falcons led 11-8 at the first buzzer, but the Mustangs went up 18-15 at the half. Saratoga tied it 34-34 by the end of the third period, but Gilroy outscored the Falcons 15-10 in the final stanza to win by five.

Julia Anderson supported Woo's effort with eight points, and Victoria Liu added seven points, including a three-pointer. Katie Levinson added six points, Judy Wang hit five, Tiffany Tan, Bryte Nielsen and Natalie Zisko had two each and Sarah Yee hit one.

Woo unloaded for 19 points in the semifinals to lead Saratoga to the 51-45 win over Notre Dame and push the Falcons into the title game. Woo had four threes among her six field goals, and she added three points at the free-throw line.

Tan finished with seven points, including a three, and Liu dropped a pair of threes to finish with six. Jordan Henry, Anderson and Nielsen dropped four points each, Wang, Selen Erdal and Zisko had two each and Henry hit one.

The split left the Falcons 5-1 for the season. Saratoga won't return to the floor now until after Christmas when the Falcons take part in the Silver Creek Tournament Dec. 27-29.
