SCU boosters set golf event
Mark O'Brien will pull on the uniform as the new head baseball coach at Santa Clara University this spring. But before he does, he'll be meeting and greeting baseball boosters in the Santa Clara University Bronco Baseball Golf Tournament on Jan. 25 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose.
The tourney features an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start and will be followed by a dinner, auction and raffle. The registration fee is $200 before Jan. 11 and $215 after Jan. 11. The fees include cart, green fees, range balls, tee prizes, lunch and dinner (cost for the dinner only is $50).
The field in the best ball scramble tourney is limited to 144 golfers.
For more information, contact Mike Oakland at 408.554.4882 or JMOakland@scu.edu, or Tom Myers at 408.554.5267 or TGMyers@scu.edu.
Youth baseball holds registration
The Saratoga Little League and Saratoga Pony League baseball programs are holding registration for the 2002 season in all divisions. Little League baseball divisions range from T-ball to majors (to 12 years old), and Pony League is for players ages 13-14.
The leagues are also looking for coaches and umpires for the coming season.
For information on the programs, call the Saratoga baseball hotline at 408-794-0279.
Hitting camps on the agenda
San Jose State University will hold its annual Spartan Baseball Winter Hitting Camps Dec. 22-23 for players ages 9-17 at Blethen Field (across from Kelly Park and Municipal Stadium).
SJSU head coach Sam Piraro will direct the camp and his assistant coach and hitting instructor, Dean Madsen, will be the key instructor at the camp. San Jose State coaches Robert Berns and Ryan Brucker will also work as instructors along with former Bellarmine star Mike Wright, currently a catcher at the Triple-A level for the San Francisco Giants, and other San Jose State players.
The cost is $75 per camper, and camps will include individualized instruction during cage drills, hitting drills and on-field hitting.
For more information, call 408.924.1287 or e-mail Madsen at deanmadsen@prodigy.net.
