    Wonderland camps are scheduled

    The Saratoga Recreation Department is accepting sign-ups for any of the three sessions of its Winter Wonderland camps. The first takes place Dec. 22; the second runs Dec. 26-28; the third is Jan. 2-4. Each session separates children into three age-appropriate groups.

    The pre-Christmas session features holiday gift-making, songs, games and a visit from Santa Claus. The other sessions include arts and crafts projects, story-telling, songs, games, cooking and other activities. Snacks are provided; campers should bring a lunch daily and wear warm jackets and closed-toe shoes. All camps meet at the Saratoga Community Center.

    Outdoorsman will talk on avalanches

    As part of its series of programs open to the community, REI Saratoga has invited professional avalanche safety course instructor Dick Penniman to give a slide show, lecture and video presentation about avalanches on Jan. 17 from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

    He will cover related topics such as meteorology, snowpack formation, stability evaluation, route selection and rescue techniques. Although REI programs are usually free, the fee for this program is $20 per person. For those interested, he will also provide information about weekend field sessions in the Donner Summit area.

    Mature driving course offered

    The Senior Friends chapter at Good Samaritan Hospital, 2425 its 55 Alive Mature Driving Courses Jan 19 and 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in conjunction with the American Association of Retired Persons. Completion of both four-hour driving skills classes, taught by trained instructors, qualifies drivers for an automobile insurance deduction good for three years. Cost is $10 per person.

    The Good Samaritan chapter of Senior Friends plans many educational, recreational and social activities each month for a yearly membership fee. For more information about 55 Alive, or about the Senior Friends, call 408.559.2555.
