Morrison leads Falcons to fourth in tournament
By Dick Sparrer
Stephanie Morrison seems to be picking up this season right where she left off last year--and last year the Saratoga junior was an all-league basketball player.
Morrison tossed in 49 points in three games to help the Falcons to a fourth-place finish at the Shirakawa Classic at Yerba Buena High School.
Morrison buried 19 points in a tourney-opening 50-45 win over the King's Academy. She came with 15 points in each of the next two games, but the Falcons lost 44-34 to eventual tourney champ Gunderson and 44-34 to Fremont in the third-place game.
Morrison, who won all-league second-team honors as a sophomore at Saratoga, had a three-pointer among her eight field goals and she added two points at the free-throw line in the win over the Knights to open the tournament.
Dernie Wang supported with 11 points in the win and Tiffany Tan added nine points. Karen Woo finished with five points and Melody Lee and Szu-Han Wang hit two points each. Tan and Woo each dropped three-pointers for the Falcons.
The clubs were locked in a 14-14 tie after a period, but Saratoga took control of the game by outscoring King's 22-10 in the second quarter.
Morrison came back with 15 points, but the Falcons lost by 10 to the Grizzlies in the semifinals. Gunderson, a 54-42 winner over Notre Dame-San Jose in the first round, beat Independence 52-51 in the tournament title game.
Tan supported Morrison's effort against the Grizzlies with eight points. D. Wang added four points, Tannaz Altafi three and Lee and Lynn Chouw two each.
It was Gunderson jumping out to a quick lead in this one, opening up an 18-5 cushion in the first period.
The loss sent Saratoga into the third-place game against Fremont, but even another 15-point effort by Morrison couldn't get the Falcons past the Firebirds. Fremont outscored Saratoga in every period but the fourth on the way to the 10-point victory.
Morrison had a three-pointer among her 15 points and D. Wang tossed in 12 points, including a three. Rebecca Yang, Tina Hsu and S. Wang had two points each in the game and Chouw added one.
Saratoga, now 2-6 in the young season, visits Lynbrook on Dec. 19, 7 p.m., before taking a couple of weeks off for the holidays.
Panthers win 2 of 3
Prospect lost a heartbreaking 36-35 decision to Independence in the first round of the Shirakawa Classic before beating James Lick to qualify for the consolation championship game.
But the Panthers lost 48-39 to Notre Dame-San Jose in the consolation finals to slip to 3-4 for the season.
Warriors win a pair
The Westmont girls, meanwhile, posted a pair of easy wins last week. The Warriors rolled past Los Gatos 43-30 in a nonleague game, then after opening the Half Moon Bay Tournament with a 56-52 loss to Aragon, they pounded Sequoia 61-19.
Senior guard Mia Simmons buried 16 points to lead the Warriors to the 13-point win over the Wildcats to open the week. Jennifer Brownridge had a three among her 12 points and Jennifer Brown added 10 points. Shannon Stenzel rounded out the scoring with five points.
Westmont jumped out to a quick 10-point lead in the first period, outscoring the Cats 14-4, and held that cushion throughout the night. The Warriors led by 11 at intermission and by nine heading into the fourth before outscoring Gatos 16-12 in the final quarter to clinch the win.
Simmons came back with 19 points and Brownridge hit 15, but the Warriors lost 56-52 to Aragon in the first round of the tournament. Brown supported with 10 points and Stenzel and Shantale Higginson had four apiece.
Simmons drilled 14 points, Brownridge had 13 and Brown hit 12 in the 61-19 win over Sequoia. Stenzel and Carly Brownridge supported with six points apiece, Higginson and Jennifer Chaney had four each and Heather Rasmussen had two.
Westmont opened up a commanding 24-3 lead in the first period and never looked back.
