Residents should oppose WVC's stadium attempt
West Valley College is once again trying to build an outdoor stadium, in spite of their repeated promises that they would never do so. The area from Redwood Middle School to Saratoga and Fruitvale avenues is already near gridlock during certain times of the day. The traffic situation will only get worse when there is a major event at the West Valley College stadium.
The West Valley College district has had a tenuous relationship with the city since the early 1960's. The city's use permit for the college says, "No large outdoor sports facilities." The blueprints the college showed to the city indicated a "Track and Practice Field." It was later learned that the college had two sets of plans, the public one showing a "Track and Practice Field" and the real plans showing a full-blown stadium with lights, sound, TV broadcasting, etc. The city went to court to stop the stadium. The neighbors filed a separate suit. The college lost both suits. Since that time, the college has discreetly continued to try to push their agenda of a full-sized stadium. Two years ago, the college district board voted on a resolution--their intent to develop a full stadium. Months ago, West Valley College completed a facilities master plan that calls for stadium seating, permanent amplified sound, high mast stadium night-lighting, etc.
Residents throughout Saratoga should join in a concerted effort to oppose the college's latest attempt to thwart the will of the Saratoga residents.

Correction
The Taste column featuring Caffe Siena in the Dec. 6 issue of the Saratoga News incorrectly stated that Tom Pavicic opened Cafe Torre in Cupertino. Pavicic actually helped open the coffeehouse. The owner is actually Vince Torre. The correct phone number of Caffe Siena is 408.399.2830.
