Church holds a vigil service on the longest night
Grace United Methodist Church, at 19848 Prospect Road in Saratoga, holds its Longest Night Vigil on Dec. 21, beginning at 5 p.m. The drop-in service is open to anyone who wishes to come in from the cold and light a candle in honor or memory of a loved one, or in thanksgiving of the past year.
The event's title reflects the fact that the winter solstice--which comprises the shortest day and longest night of the year--occurs on Dec. 21 this year. Visitors may stay for as little or as long as they wish, until 7 p.m. For more information, call the church at 408.252.8268.
Rec. Department becomes a child's winter wonderland
The Saratoga Recreation Department offers its Winter Wonderland day camp for children in two sessions this month. The program includes songs, games, crafts, cooking projects, storytimes and other activities. Children should bring their own lunches and wear warm jackets and closed-toe shoes. Snacks are provided. All children must be toilet-trained.
Session II runs Dec. 21-22; session III runs Dec. 27-29. Each session runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days and consists of three groups: Hollyberries (ages 3 1/2-5); Reindeer (ages 5-7) and Snowflakes (ages 8-10).
For more information, or to sign up, call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249.
Outdoorswoman tells of touring the backcountry
As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited Catherine Stifter to give a slide presentation on Jan. 2, at 7 p.m.
Stifter will show her favorite places for skiing and snowshoeing day tours in Tahoe National Forest, off Highway 49 between Sierra City and Yuba Pass. She'll also provide tips and advice on navigation, gear and safety.
REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. There is no charge to attend this event; all ages are welcome. For more information, call 408.871.8765.
