Saratoga NewsSports BriefsScholastic LeadersThe Cupertino boys water polo squad was among the teams honored by the Central Coast Section as Fall Season Scholastic champions. The Pioneers posted a 3.4770 grade point average to finish first among boys water polo teams in the CCS. Area teams ranking high in the CCS scholastic list included: field hockey-- Saratoga, third at 3.5560; Lynbrook, fourth at 3.4311; Cupertino, fifth at 3.4190; girls tennis-- Lynbrook, second at 3.6420; Saratoga, fifth at 3.5620; girls volleyball-- Lynbrook, sixth at 3.4303; girls water polo-- Lynbrook, third at 3.4375. Heisman AwardsRicky Williams of Texas won't be the only athlete walking off with a Heisman Trophy this year. Thanks to the sponsorship of Wendy's, there are also High School Heisman awards presented to top male and female athletes in the country. Local high school athletes nominated for the coveted national award include: Kevin Brown (Bellarmine) and Danielle LeBaron (Presentation) of San Jose, Victoria Doane (Wilcox) of Santa Clara, Alexander Shoor (Saratoga) of Saratoga and Jason Dent (Wilcox), Sueh Han Liew (Fremont) and Frederick Lwee (Fremont) of Sunnyvale. Pitching ClinicFormer local fast-pitch superstar Whitney Floyd will host lessons and clinics for girls softball pitchers. Floyd starred locally at Lynbrook High School and went on to All-American status at UC-Berkeley. She is on the coaching staff at Santa Clara University. For more information, call 554-5063. Baseball CampsStanford will host a holiday baseball camp December 2729 for players ages 1318. Hitting, pitching and defensive instruction will be covered, and the cost is $100. Pitching ProgramWest Valley Community College pitching coach Burch Boehner will present a winter pitching program Wednesday evenings, Jan. 27March 10, in the West Valley gym in Saratoga. Players ages 910 attend at 7 p.m., and players ages 1112 attend at 8 p.m. Call Boehner at 998-5338.
