Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsRec. Department has winter activity guideThe Saratoga Recreation Department's Winter 1999 Activity Guide is now available. Although most of the classes do not begin until mid-January, the department recommends individuals sign up soon, as many classes fill up quickly. Among the many new classes this winter season are Music Together for toddlers and their parents or caregivers; Shuttle, Spindle and Dye Pot for children ages 7 to 9; Paint and Play at Petroglyph for children, teenagers and adults; and Hello to the Getty Center and Woven Arts, both for adults only. Activity guides are available at the Saratoga Community Center, the Saratoga Community Library and various local businesses. Residents can also have the guide mailed to them. Aegis Gallery plans a new group showThe member artists exhibiting at Saratoga's Aegis Gallery are putting together a new group show titled "Starting Over." Beginning Dec. 29, the exhibition features new and experimental works from the gallery's more than a dozen artists. Genres include ceramics, handmade paper, paintings in an array of mediums and photography. Selected artwork from previous exhibitions will be sold at a discount. A reception takes place Jan. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. The exhibit runs through Jan. 25. Aegis Gallery is at 14531 Big Basin Way, Unit 2. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Program on John Steinbeck's life on tap at libraryLocal writer and historian Dr. Audry Lynch presents a free program, The World of John Steinbeck, on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. The lecture includes a show of more than 100 slides from Lynch's own collection; the images cover Steinbeck's personal and public life, still shots from his movies and scenes from Steinbeck country. Lynch will also briefly discuss her book, With Steinbeck in the Sea of Cortez. A question and answer period follows the program.
