After four weeks of dawn-till-dusk fasting, local Pakistani-Americans gathered in Khalida Kareemi's Saratoga home to celebrate the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Guests wore the traditional Pakastani silk outfits and dined on a sumptous spread of foods Dec. 14.

    Ludhi dance

During a Ludhi dance session Ritu Manocha twirls through Kareemi's living room. Kareemi says the dancing style is followed at weddings and other ceremonies in villages throughout Pakistan.

Most of the guests assembled, Kareemi notes, were moderate Muslims. Few of the women wear the orthodox veil required by some strict Islamic sects.

Although men were in attendance, the hostess says they were shy, explaining why they avoided our photographer.

Next year, the celebration will move to another home.
