Brian Edwards wasn't a triple threat in the classic football sense.

But make no mistake about it... Edwards was definitely a triple threat for the Los Gatos football team this past fall.

In the days of football past, a triple threat was an athlete who could run, pass and kick.

Well, Edwards didn't pass or kick for the Wildcats in 2000. But he ran the ball, caught passes and returned kicks well enough to lead the Cats to a 13-0 season.

And the senior wide receiver performed well enough in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League to win the league's most valuable player award.

The speedster starred as a receiver and a free safety for the Gatos team that won the De Anza Division title and backed that up with a Central Coast Section Division III championship.

Edwards was one of seven Wildcats to win a special award on the De Anza Division all-league team. Running back Derek Smith was named the outstanding senior; junior quarterback Trent Edwards was the outstanding offensive back; senior Nick McAlpine was the outstanding offensive lineman; senior Joey Warren was the outstanding wide receiver; senior Nick Skrabe was the outstanding linebacker; and junior John Espe was the outstanding defensive lineman.

Senior offensive linemen Albert Tao and Bryan Tompkins, junior running back Ryan Katz and senior utility player Matt Garlow won first team honors offensively, and senior noseguard Jesse DeWathe and junior linebacker Drew Rogers were picked to the defensive first team.
