Vikes, Pioneers are all-leaguers

Leon, Morgan win special honors

By Dick Sparrer

Mountain View may have won the football title in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

But Cupertino and Lynbrook didn't do badly, either. And the proof came in the selection of the all-league team.

Cupertino and Lynbrook finished behind the Spartans in the league race, but both teams placed five players on the list when the division's coaches picked their dream team.

Mountain View posted a 6-0 record to win the division title, and Cupertino was a close second at 4-2.

Quarterback Alan Willcox, wide receiver Eme Hernandez, running back David Jackson, defensive lineman Dan Donahue and defensive back Jeff Hesse represented the second-place Pioneers on the all-league squad.

Lynbrook finished just behind Cupertino in the league standings, but the Vikings were dead even with the Pioneers in all-league selections with five.

Quarterback Dan Sullivan, running back Jerry Cabral, defensive lineman Kevin Holley, linebacker Tim Pyle and defensive back Sean McCarthy were Vikings named to the all-league list.

Fremont put a pair of players on the division team. Wide receiver Marcos Page and defensive back Roy Ross were Indians winning all-league honors.

Warrior, Panther players honored

Westmont and Prospect football players won honors when Blossom Valley Athletic League all-league teams were announced.

The Warriors put four players on the all-league squad in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.

Tight end Andy Brown, offensive linemen Kevin Laney and Sam Licinia and defensive back Vinnie Perez were Westmont players winning all-league spots.

Prospect had a pair of players claim special honors in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

Wide receiver Brandon Morgan was selected as the junior of the year in the division and running back Craig Nomura was named to the first-team backfield.

Leon is an mvp

Prospect breezed through the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL in girls' volleyball, so it was no surprise to see the Panthers dominate the all-league roster.

Michelle Leon topped the list of Panthers honored on the dream team. Leon was picked the division's most valuable player. Jenn Cox and Amy Forney joined Leon on the all-league first-team.

Leon wrapped up by earning a spot on the honorable mention list on the all-Central Coast Section team.

Matadors top list

Monta Vista nailed three spots on the all-league team after coasting to the title in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

Liz Criswell, Jennifer Purdy and Deborah Robertson helped the Matadors clinch the league championship and were honored with positions on the all-league list. Also picked to the squad were Ally King of Saratoga, Dawnell Lawson of Fremont and Stacey Zuccaro of Cupertino.

Homestead and Lynbrook did well enough to place a combined five players on the all-league team.
