Prospect's Campbell among CCS Honor Coaches

    By Dick Sparrer

Daniel Cruz of Del Mar, Jean Campbell of Prospect and Matt Anderson of Los Gatos were among the recipients of Central Coast Section Honor Coach Awards this past fall.

Cruz is the cross country coach for the Dons, Campbell coaches field hockey at Prospect and Anderson coaches boys water polo for the Wildcats. The three were joined on the honors list by Ron DiMaggio, Westmoor cross country; Ed Buller, Oak Grove football; Barbara Abeln, Santa Teresa girls tennis; and Anne Finney, Independence girls volleyball.

Cruz, who first coached at Del Mar from 1975-77, has coached the Dons in cross country and track since 1994. He has also coached at Mt. Pleasant, West Valley Community College and Santa Clara University.

Campbell has coached field hockey and badminton at Prospect since 1996, but she started in the Campbell Union High School District in 1967 at Branham. She then coached at Leigh, Prospect and Del Mar before returning to Prospect three years ago. Campbell, who is also the athletic director at Prospect, led her field hockey team into the CCS finals this season.

Anderson has served as the Gatos polo coach since 1993 where he revived the program and turned the Wildcats into perennial title contenders.
