Mayfield should lay off the horses

I'm still trying to figure out how Mark Mayfield was able to score a half-page of the Saratoga News, in a feature box no less, to vent his juvenile opinions on a subject that has already been done to death by Los Angeles advertising copywriters. They, too, are offended by any creature that doesn't catch Frisbees and anything that doesn't smell like carbon monoxide fumes or the very latest overpriced toiletries.

On his favorite subject of manure, and the spreading thereof, I have some experience. Early in my life, I was a ranch hand, thus having the opportunity to clean up after several different species, and I can assure anyone who has never done so that horse byproducts are among the least offensive produced by any animal. Frisbee catchers--and throwers--on the other hand, leave behind the most incredibly foul-odored material I have ever had the misfortune to step in.

In case the learned M.W.M. was not aware of it, horses in their natural state spread their manure as widely and as randomly as possible, and then move on, giving predators a very dispersed scent trail to try to follow.

If Mayfield's delicate sensibilities are so terribly offended by horses that he needs to rant on about them at great length, while his wife owns horses and doesn't share his slightly hysterical equiphobia, I would suggest a divorce immediately. This guy is definitely full of something, and its probably more bovine than equine.

Reader is disgusted by dog walkers, too

I agree with the lady whose letter was published in the Dec. 15 edition of the Saratoga News. I am just as disgusted as she with dog walkers who can't clean up after their dogs!

Not only do they leave their messes on the sidewalks of Big Basin Way, but every day I watch as a couple drives up to the corner of Sixth Street and Big Basin Way, lets their dog out to do his "business," and when he's finished-- without cleaning up anything--lets the dog back into the car and drives off!

People who leave such messes for others to step in, or to clean up after them, are disgusting and selfish!

A man is just a man of course, of course ...

I'd like to comment on the opinion piece by Mark Mayfield, "A horse is a horse, of course, of course," which appeared in the Dec. 15 issue of the Saratoga News.

I think the world would be better served by getting rid of most men. They've become as useless as a pair of worn out old shoes. There may have been a time when it was necessary for them to bring home the paycheck. But they never were much good at taking out the garbage.

Horses don't fare too well in battle, but it was man who invented cruise missiles and laser-guided bombs that kill thousands of people.

Of course, outlawing an entire species is out of the question, but I believe our government should enact tough new laws to restrict male production and keep them for procreation purposes only. I doubt if they could even learn to jump up and catch a Frisbee in their teeth.

Incidentally, I was born and raised in the middle of a large city.

    New appointments are raising concerns

Is anyone watching the appointments made by our City Council? First they appointed as the new city attorney the attorney who wrote Measure G, which is the mantra of the current clique running the show in Saratoga these days. Now I read in the Dec. 15 issue of the Saratoga News about the appointment of two members from one family to serve as Parks and Recreation commissioners.

Just how independent can each of them be? I can just imagine how Nick Seroff will explain to his wife when he disagrees with his mother-in-law Elaine Clabeaux.

Come on, folks. Is this really the way you want the city to be controlled?

    Reader was just making suggestions

With all the edjumacation that Mr. Jeffery Schwartz has, I would have thought that he would have understood my letter. I did not say or imply that I am or desire to be a cartoonist, as he stated in his letter to the editor in the Nov. 24 issue of the Saratoga News.

Does suggesting cartoons imply that I am a cartoonist? If it does, I must be more careful in making suggestions about other subjects, such as telling someone to apply a Band-Aid, for fear of implying that I am a doctor. But Mr. Schwartz has a Ph.D., so he must know.

One thing Mr. Schwartz pointed out is the same thing I had pointed out in my letter, that Mr. DeCinzo is not bipartisan in his cartoons. But that is not to be expected from those that do not like to have opposing views presented. To them, being bipartisan is agreeing with their views.

Gay Crawford thankful for being so involved

Special thanks to Kara Chalmers and the Saratoga News for the interview, pictures and story about my involvement with the American Cancer Society.

As I prepare this morning to go in for surgery for a ruptured disk, I have been lifted and touched by the many people whom I've known over the years who have called about the article, sent me copies or stopped me on the street--and in the post office--to congratulate me. I am fortunate to have been involved with so many wonderful organizations in this community and hope my story also tells about the services they provide as well.
