Saratoga NewsBernard wins special division awardBy Dick Sparrer Four teams from the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finished strong enough to wind up in the Central Coast Section football playoffs this past fall. And all four were well-represented when the league's coaches got together at the season's end to select their all-league squad for 1998. Topping the list was Tab Perry of Milpitas, who won the league's most valuable player award after leading the Trojans to the division championship. Perry is just a junior. Perry was one of four Milpitas players claiming special honors on the league's dream team, and one of 17 Trojans to earn all-league recognition. Milpitas players nailing special honors were Mark Torrillo, outstanding lineman; Cedric Dawson, outstanding outside linebacker; and Tyrone James, outstanding defensive back. Milpitas coach Kelly King was named the league's outstanding coach. Los Gatos players claimed three of the league's special player awards. Chris Cavanagh was named the outstanding defensive player, Ryan Sorahan was picked the outstanding offensive back and Austin Neale was tabbed the outstanding defensive lineman. Wilcox had a couple of players pick up special awards, including Mark Trujillo, outstanding offensive lineman, and Charles Boughton, outstanding offensive player. Saratoga, another of the league's playoff teams, was represented on the special honors list by senior running back Ryan Bernard, named the outstanding running back in the division. Monta Vista's Ryan Mitchell rounded out the list of special award winners. Mitchell was named the De Anza Division's outstanding linebacker. Saratoga was well-represented on the all-league first team by running back Brent Coleman, offensive linemen Lou Petrossi and Brady Moran, defensive back Andre Sorba, inside linebacker Dan Goñi, outstanding linebacker Andre Bosworth, defensive backs Alex Foster and Tim Young and utility player Brian Cavanaugh. Running back Jason Choe, offensive lineman Eric Allen, defensive back Eric Bickenbach and defensive lineman Curtis Stanley were Saratoga players named to the all-league second team. Bosworth and Choe are just juniors.
