Saratoga NewsNews BriefsDeputy exchanges gunfire with parolee A routine patrol in an unincorporated area of Saratoga took a dangerous turn Dec. 23. Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Vasquez, an 11-year veteran of the force, exchanged gunfire with suspect Paul Henry Kaiser, 29, who was out on parole for robbery. Vasquez had spotted Kaiser walking down Bainter Avenue at approximately 4:20 p.m. and thought he looked suspicious, Lt. Cary Colla of the West- side Substation said. When Vasquez asked Kaiser if he needed help, Kaiser told the deputy he was out on parole for robbery and then pulled a gun from his waist belt, Colla said. The deputy quickly got out of the way and gunfire was exchanged. Colla said neither the suspect nor Vasquez was injured. The suspect also had a .357-caliber Magnum in a black duffel bag he was carrying. Kaiser was arrested without further incident, Colla said, and was charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, felon with a weapon and parole violation. Kaiser was booked into county jail, pending arraignment. County Committee to discuss report The Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization will hold a public meeting on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m., at Lynbrook High School, located at 1280 Johnson Ave. in San Jose. The committee will hear a presentation of the final report on the West Valley areawide one-year study by consultant Michael Winters. The committee may or may not take action on the study. The final report is currently available at the Center for Educational Planning at the county Office of Education for $4 or on the Internet. Council will discuss expanding coverage The City Council is expected to discuss the issue of televising its adjourned Tuesday night meetings on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Senior Day Care room of the Community Center. The issue was first discussed by the council last year. City Manager Larry Perlin said that in addition to televising meetings, the council will also discuss possibly moving all City Council meetings into the large multipurpose room of the Community Center on a permanent basis.
