Home opens its doors to support SJ Symphony Tour of Classic Victorian a major fundraiser (By Shari Kaplan) Despite a season of financial hardships, the San Jose Symphony is still alive and kicking - and fundraising, including right here in the West Valley. The symphony earned more than $71,000 for its San Jose Music Fund from its first benefit concert, which took place Feb. 23 at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts - it was the first time in five years that a San Jose Symphony concert sold out. An April 27 benefit also proved lucrative for the fund, which supports a transition staff and advisory panel working on a new strategic and business plan for the symphony and its proposed 2002-03 concert season. The San Jose Symphony Auxiliary is also helping - as it does every year - with its 2002 Symphony Showcase Home. This year, 21 interior designers from Morgan Hill to Los Altos have converged at 55 Hernandez Ave. in Los Gatos to transform a historic 5,000-square-foot Queen Anne Victorian into a showcase for their creative talents. The three-story villa, owned by Los Gatans William and Helen Cadiente, will be open for public tours through June 23. A silent auction and drawing will also take place at the home throughout the month, as will a gift gallery offering garden ornaments, handcrafted jewelry and gourmet food items for sale. Proceeds from tickets and sales benefit the rejuvenation of the San Jose Symphony. Among the 21 themed areas and rooms of the showcase home are many decorated by local designers. These include Floral Essence of the Victorian Veranda by Saratoga Ethan Allen and many rooms done by Los Gatos firms: Master Sitting Room by the Rose Collection, A Not So Straight-Laced Bath by Dizzy Dreams, Lucy's Kitchen by Rebecca's Well, Formal Gathering With a European Flair by H.K. Designs, a hallway by Classic Kids Photography and an area by Interior Services of Los Gatos. Designated a historical landmark in 1998, the Victorian villa was built in 1887 and had several owners before being purchased in 1947 by a Rev. Lawrence Taylor and his family. After Taylor's passing, his widow and daughter lived there until 1993, when the widow died and the Cadientes bought the house. Having become friendly with the family, they invited the daughter to live there as long as she wished, which was three more years until her 1996 death. The Cadientes have since renovated and restored the house in several ways, but all in keeping with its original appearance. The San Jose Symphony Auxiliary Showcase 2002 runs June 1-23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays; closed Mondays. Children older than 9 are welcome to accompany their families. Admission is $25 per person. Tickets will be sold until one hour before closing. For more information, call 408-354-0773. |
