Mamola broke two long-standing hurdle records at Westmont this spring. By Dick Sparrer Records are made to be broken ... and Mitty's Mike Boulton and Westmont's Ashley Mamola certainly proved that to be true this past spring. Both Boulton and Mamola snapped long-standing track records at their respective schools, Boulton breaking his school's record with an outstanding effort at the Central Coast Section (CCS) championships. Boulton broke a school standard that's stood since 1985, and Mamola eclipsed two school marks - one that was set back in 1980 and another set in 1982. Boulton, a Saratoga resident, romped to a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at the CCS track and field championships held May 24 at San Jose City College. Boulton ran a personal best 39.62 in the event, breaking a school record set in 1985. It was just one of two events that Boulton had qualified in. He was also eighth in the 110-meter high hurdles, running 16.04. Boulton missed a trip to the state meet by less than one-tenth of a second. The third place finisher at CCS ran 39.68 to edge out the Mitty junior for the state spot. Still, qualifying in two events for the section meet remains quite an accomplishment. And Boulton, who will run summer track for the ThunderBoltz, will have another year on the oval for the Monarchs. Like Boulton, Mamola qualified for CCS finals in the hurdles, and she barely missed going in both events. Mamola ran seventh in the 100 hurdles in 15.98 and finished 10th in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 47.27. She advanced to the CCS finals in the 100 hurdles, where she ran sixth in 15.78. Despite failing to qualify for the finals, Mamola's time in the 300 intermediate hurdles was good for a new school record, breaking ... her own! Earlier in the year, Mamola had broken long-standing school records in both hurdle events at Westmont. Mamola ran 15.27 in the 100 hurdles to break the mark set by Michelle Nicholas in 1980, and she ran 47.43 to snare the record set by Camille McGowan in 1982. At the CCS trials, the senior lowered her own school record to 47.27. Swimmers honored Abra Armor and Amber Hovey of Homestead and Erica Liu of Mitty have been nominated for swimming's National Federation (NF) Honor Roll based on their times at the CCS championships. Armor, a junior, beat the NF time of 24.70 with a 24.32 in the 50-yard freestyle at CCS, and Hovey, a freshman, bettered the NF time of 56.50 with a 55.73 in the 100 butterfly. Liu, a sophomore and a resident of Saratoga, topped the NF time of 1:04.10 with a 1:03.05 in the 100 breaststroke.
