Photo exhibit highlights past, present

Aegis Gallery of Fine Art in Saratoga couldn't have picked a more appropriate photograph to reproduce on the postcards it sent out to publicize its newest installation, which runs through July 29.

The postcard is a miniature version of a larger photo that seamlessly blends a color image of water droplets on bright red tile and a black-and-white one of milky white bubbles on the same tile.

This contrast is what the exhibit is all about. Titled "Photography: Then and Now," it features digital color photos by Los Gatan Tom Keenan and traditional black-and-white shots by John Howard of Sunnyvale.

Keenan got interested in photography at age 12 and continued the hobby until his 20s, at which time he took a "sabbatical" - to make a living and get married. Over the past several years, he has returned to his photographic roots, only to find how much the field has been changed by digital cameras, photo-manipulating computer software and other technology. He adds, however, that some things have not changed: "seeing and the ability to visualize are still the keys," he reveals in his artist's statement.

A photographer for more than 50 years, Howard says he is most inspired by the symmetry and patterns found in nature, along with nostalgia and things that have withstood the passage of time. The latter topic could include the old cameras he operates manually that contain little or no whistles and bells - attributes that have become standard fare today.

At Aegis Gallery, viewers can compare and contrast the views of the world as seen through Keenan's and Howard's very different viewfinders. The installation explores humans' influence on the earth and ability and desire to present and preserve their varying views of it. The exhibit also includes a collection of old daguerreotypes and tintypes that illustrate the very early history of photography as an art form.

Aegis Gallery of Fine Art is located at 14531 Big Basin Way, Unit 2, in the Saratoga Village. Gallery hours are Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The gallery is closed Mondays. For additional information, call 408.867.0171.
