Quito kids nail third place in District 12 tournament

The season came to a premature end for the Quito Little League major division all-stars last week.

But those Quito kids sure didn't go down without a fight!

Quito fought its way to the finals of the winner's bracket in the District 12 12-year-old all-star tournament played over the past few weeks at the Branham Hills Little League field in San Jose.

Quito lost to Lincoln Glen in the winner's finale, though, to drop into the loser's bracket. Once there, Quito lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Los Gatos to slip out of the tourney.

Lincoln Glen went on to beat Los Gatos 6-5 to claim the district championship, and Quito ended up in third place.

The locals opened the tournament with back-to-back wins over Cambrian Park and Los Gatos, winning the second game in thrilling come-from-behind fashion.

Quito trailed Gatos 6-0 heading into the sixth inning, but the local kids rallied for six runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings. In the eighth, Sam Balog blasted a grand slam homer and Quito ended up a 10-6 winner.

The win pushed the Quito all-stars into the finals of the winner's bracket against Lincoln Glen, but they lost to fall into the loser's side of the tourney.

Los Gatos had battled back from the 10-6 loss to Quito with wins over Saratoga and Almaden to set up the rematch.

This time it was Gatos hitting the grand slam when Nick Kalpin cleared the bags with a first-inning blast.

The slammer put Los Gatos up 4-0 in a hurry, but the Quito kids came fighting back with three runs to cut the gap to 4-3, only to come up a run short.

Nicholas Kinder led the offense with two doubles and a single for Quito. Ryan Takaki singled, walked twice and was hit by a pitch, reaching base four times, and Chris King and Nicholas Clark each singled and walked.

Members of the Quito all-star team this year were Kinder, David Messer, Alex Juull, Balog, Brandon Carpenter, King, Jeff Sloan, Clark, Takaki, Jeff McInnis, Brian Cook and Ryan Picchi.
