Crowder dives in to design new high
school pools

TRIBUTE TIME: Here's a tribute to Bob Crowder for all his volunteer work toward the new high school swim centers—both the completed pool at Saratoga High and the proposed new pool at Los Gatos. So attests Crowder's colleague at Gilbane Building Company, John Kessler.

Crowder has given countless hours of his time and pro bono services to the projects on the two campuses, Kessler says. With Principal Kevin Skelly and Assistant Principal Karen Hyde, he helped plan, design and manage the construction phase of the project at Saratoga High.

After the success of that venture and seeing a similar need to replace the outdated aquatics facilities at LGHS, Crowder was a founding member of a parent group that is working with Principal Trudy McCulloch to plan and fundraise for the Los Gatos Aquatic Center, now in its design phase.

In his professional life he works for Gilbane Building Company and was supervisor of project management services for the school district bonds passed in '98. Those bonds, earmarked for maintenance, a new science building and a library for LGHS, had nothing to do with funding for pools. Pool funding was acquired through community fundraising.

Crowder was an outstanding swimmer in his school days, and his sons, both championship swimmers at LGHS, are following in his watery wake.

BANG-UP ANNIVERSARY: This Fourth of July was a special one for longtime Saratoga residents Anne and Victor Zane. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary along with the nation's birthday in the company of family and friends at the home of Anne and Jim Sorden in Saratoga.

And there were surprise celebrants: All three of the Zane children and two of their grandchildren showed up. There was special memorabilia on display and a contest held to identify events and personalities from 1942, the fateful year.

The three Zane children are: Paul Zane of Renton, Wash.; Christa Zane Brooks of Titusville, Fla.; and Gail Zane Bush of Seattle. The two grandsons who attended are Alec Brooks, 19, a student at Oxford-Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., and Max Brooks, 21, who has just graduated from that university.

ART EDUCATORS FORUM: Saratogan Sybil Wolden attended the Art Educators' Forum at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., this summer. Wolden teaches at Homestead High and was one of nearly 450 participants.

A plethora of workshops introduced new methods in the teaching of art and design, as well as renewing knowledge of techniques already used in the classroom. Subjects covered included film and video, printmaking, photography, computer graphics and animation. The college has an extensive specialized library, as well.

Educators mingled with colleagues from around the world, since attendees came from 47 states and nine countries. Workshops included webpage design, product design, dance, sculpture, screenwriting, digital imaging and video production.

Participants' work was displayed at a closing exhibition at the end of the week. Lesson plans from all were compiled into a resource book for use during the coming school year.

GARLIC FESTIVAL VENDOR: Silks and garlic may not sound like a compatible joining, but when it's Kavita Singh and the Gilroy Garlic Festival, it seems to work. The festival brought out many arts and crafts purveyors, and chief among them was Singh of Saratoga, who is on her way to becoming a regular at the three-day fair.

Singh creates and sells hand-painted silk scarves, jackets, blouses and sarong-like garments, called ruanas, that can be worn as a shawl. For the festival she produced hand-painted garlic motifs on cotton T-shirts.

Singh has had a multi-continent career, having worked for Yves St. Laurent, Lanvin, Fieldcrest, Wamsutta and Schumacher, among others. She has two sons: Vikram, a sophomore at Saratoga High, and Karanvir, a sophomore at UC-Berkeley and a Regent Scholar.

VACATION UP IN SMOKE: The Ian Webb family intended to spend the Fourth of July at their Sierra cabin, but those plans went up in smoke. Fortunately the mountain fire didn't torch their vacation home, but the Webbs had to be evacuated so that the 1,000 firefighters could contain the blaze.

"We were given a half-hour to get our things out," Louise relates, so they beat a hasty retreat before July 4. Those fireworks sound a bit too close for comfort.

REGULAR READER: At least one Saratogan, Kate Noakes, is a regular at the Poetry Center San Jose monthly readings at the SJ Museum of Art, sharing her poetry. The art museum provides the setting for these third Sunday events at 2 p.m.

MEN'S CLUB: New Saratoga Men's Club officers are Marlon Smith, president; Bradley Wyatt, vice president; and Stephen Rice, secretary/treasurer. Other board members: George Roupe, Martin Trieb, Alan Alameda, Carl Cardona and Armon Mills.

GRAND JURORS: These folks are part of the 2002-03 Santa Clara County Grand Jury: from Saratoga, Donna J. Butcher, and from Los Gatos, Leo B. Mark.
