Crews will work on sewer lines on Fruitvale, Allendale
By Kate Carter
Work on a sewer line along portions of Fruitvale and Allendale avenues is scheduled to begin Aug. 12 and could impact traffic along those roads through mid-October.

However, the West Valley Sanitation District is starting the work to replace aging pipe in the vicinity of Redwood Middle School in the hopes that it can be cleared out of that area before school begins.

Peter Sevcik, the district's director of engineering and operations, said that the approximately $810,000 project has been in the works for about a year. About 6,000 feet of sewage line will be replaced, extending from Montauk Drive to Allendale Avenue down Fruitvale Avenue and from Fruitvale Avenue to about Via Alto Court down Allendale Avenue. The existing line has been experiencing problems related to its age—it was built at about the same time as the houses there were—40 to 50 years ago—and they haven't been upgraded since.

The new line will also be larger than the existing one so that it can carry more of the flow from Redwood Middle School. The school's recent construction was built close enough to the line the school now uses to create some problems, Sevcik said; the diversion is intended to eliminate those.

Instead of tearing up road the entire length of the line, contractor D'Arcy & Harty Construction will be digging up just the 24 manholes, spaced about 300 to 500 feet apart, and then drilling horizontally underground to replace the pipe, Sevcik said. Lanes will be closed and parking could be limited during construction, but no roads will be closed. Driveways will remain accessible and police will be present during the work, he said.

Sewage service itself will only be interrupted for a few hours while the new pipe is being connected, and affected customers will be notified in advance.

Work will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and neighbors will be notified as construction proceeds from the school area east down Allendale Avenue, Sevcik said. If work is slower than anticipated, the district will notify the city that it needs to work nighttime or weekend hours, but that isn't expected, he said.
