She's one of the newest members to join the
Gallery Saratoga artists' cooperative. As a
Redwood City resident, she's also got one of
the longest drives to and from the gallery.
Neither fact, however, has stopped artist
Lynne D'Aloisio from putting together
"Explorations: Landscape and Still Life in
Oil"her first Gallery Saratoga
installation, which runs through Aug. 15.
One of those rare California natives,
D'Aloisio was born and raised in the Bay Area
and says that her talent and interest in art
began emerging at an early age. Imaginary
scenes and animals were among her favorite
subject matter.
Upon graduating from high school, D'Aloisio
traveled in Europe for a time, where she
studied the works of many of "the great
masters of painting," as she calls them. Upon
returning to the United States, she enrolled
in college with the aim of being an art
major. She switched to anthropology, however,
when she couldn't satisfy her need for
instructors to train her in traditional
painting techniques.
Post-college and living in New York City,
D'Aloisio continued her artistic studies and
painting projects and supported herself with
a night job at a law firm. She eventually
returned to California, where she took
various workshops and studied classical
drawing and painting with Bay Area artists
James Smyth, Brigitte Curt, Charles Muench
and Rebecca Alzofon.
D'Aloisio says she is particularly inspired
by the dramatic lighting and composition of
17th-century Baroque artists. She says
another source of inspiration is the early
California impressionist movement. Having
matured a bit since her childhood days of
imaginary scenes and animals, D'Aloisio
currently focuses on portraits, figurative
works, landscapes and still lifes. She
currently grows roses, which she paints
outdoors in the plein-air style.
Among D'Aloisio's artistic affiliations are
the Oil Painters of America, the Portrait
Society of America and the American
Impressionist Society.
An artist's reception, with refreshments,
takes place Aug. 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. The
public is welcome to attend. Gallery Saratoga
is located at 14435-A Big Basin Way and
specializes in exhibiting the work of local
artists. Works shown at the gallery include
oil and watercolor paintings, ceramics,
jewelry, photography, painted silk, turned
wood sculptures, paper art and wearable art.
Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through
Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the gallery is
closed Mondays. For more information, call
