Artists take their work into the garden for
show
By Mary Ann Cook
GARDEN PARTY: Gallery Saratoga will host its
annual Garden Party Art Show Aug. 25 from 1
to 5 p.m. at 20215 Blauer Drive, Saratoga.
The 27 artists represented will show oil and
watercolors, photographs, wood sculpture,
jewelry, silk paintings, paper art, pottery
and prints.
The Saratoga artists on dock will be
Gloria Watson, painter; Donna
Padrick, potter; Felicia Pollock
and Luisa Tosi-Claeys,
photographers; and former Saratogan Dori
Phifer, who creates encaustics. The
Los Gatans aboard are Kathy Keenan,
painter; Jeanne Redig, potter; and
Karen Eason, photographer.
Les Landin's Skillet Likkers Family
Band will play throughout the afternoon, and
refreshments will be served. The gallery has
relocated to 14435 A Big Basin Way. The phone
number is 408.867.1796 and the website's URL
is www.gallerysaratoga.com.
HOLE IN ONE: Bruce McCombs shot a hole
in one at Rancho Cañada in Carmel
Valley and won for his daughter
Allyson, 19, a $35,000 SUV. The event
was a Buick Scramble, and McCombs' feat was
on the third hole, west course, using a 4
iron for the 170-yard distance.
McCombs has played golf for years, but this
was his first hole in one. That
accomplishment didn't seem to faze him, since
he later sank a 60-foot putt. Yikes!
Allyson, who is a graduate of Saratoga High,
will start her final year at West Valley
College this fall. She was working as a
church camp counselor at Los Gatos Christian
Church while her dad zipped through Rancho
Cañada. The new car owner intends to
transfer to UC-Santa Cruz with the ultimate
goal of becoming a teacher.
Actually, shopping for a car had been next on
the McCombs' agenda, but a new Buick
certainly hadn't been on that list. McCombs
is the owner of Pacific Waterbed, a mattress
and furniture store at Saratoga Avenue and
Stevens Creek Boulevard.
HONK: The Shoestring Theatre Company of the
Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos will present
Honk!, a musical retelling of the
Ugly Duckling fable, at 7:30 p.m. on
Aug. 23, 24, 30 and 31 and at 2 p.m. Sept. 1
at the church social hall, 16575 Shannon
Road.
Marcus Dufort, 14, plays the lead role
of Ugly. Other principals are Cait
Andrews as Tomcat; Kris Andrews as
Ugly's mother; and Stan Scott as
Bullfrog. Sarabella Muise of Saratoga
is a Froglet and Snowflake; Katie
Fotion of Monte Sereno is also in the
cast.
The ensemble of 44 includes 25 children. This
show won a top award when it ran in London,
reports Carolyn Dufort, Shoestring
Theatre rep. For more information, call
408.356.6156.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS: The Special Olympics bocce
ball team sponsored by Campo di Bocce won
first place in a sectional tournament against
teams from Monterey and San Jose. Pete
and Sally Pavicich coach the team,
which trains at Campo di Bocce.
The competition will definitely be part of
the Special Olympics next year as well, said
Matt Coen, a Special Olympics
director. Participants included Heather
McFarland, Peter Weller, Edmund
Ma, Dan Wilson, Dustin Rodgers,
Phillip Beckerheath and Kelly
Anderson. Other players were Curtis
Sedgwick and Scott Velasquez.
Volunteers for the team included Matt
Bertlet and Eric Martin.
Campo di Bocce owners Tom and
Maureen Albanese of Saratoga donated
shirts to the players, who were so delighted
they immediately donned them over the clothes
they were wearing.
COMES AN ICON: Sur La Table will help
celebrate cooking icon Julia Child's
90th birthday Aug. 15 with a raffle drawing
at the store Aug. 31. Winners will receive an
autographed copy of her groundbreaker, The
French Chef, recently rereleased by
Random House.
The grande dame of the kitchen will also be
appearing at Sur La Table Oct. 3, from 2 to
3:30 p.m., to sign copies of her books.
There's a limit of four books and no
guarantee she'll get to everyone in that
time. The line went on for blocks when last
she appeared in these parts. The signing was
scheduled for 10 a.m., and some disciples
started lining up by 6 a.m. By 8 a.m. there
was already quite a line. A Child visit is
not just a book signing, but a pilgrimage.
BIRDHOUSE VENUE: The recently elected
officers of the Los Gatos-Saratoga
Concert Association were June Sythe,
president; Lea Frey and Diana
Pleasant, both first vice presidents and
concert chairwomen; Berit Cattolico,
second vice president, membership; and
Jean Nelson and James Tobias,
both third vice presidents of publicity.
The meeting was held in the garden of
Ollie and Ben Grespan. Fifty
birdhouses adorned the fence, each with a
different decor. Seems Ben builds these
birdhouses, then assigns different friends to
decorate them.
NEW BOARD: David Elgart is the new
president of SASCC (Saratoga Area Senior
Coordinating Council). Marilyn White
is vice president at large; Philip
Gould, vice president of finance; John
Feemster, vice president of the senior
center; Gloria Watson, secretary; and
Chuck Page, development director.
