West Valley will hold auditions

The theater arts department at West Valley College in Saratoga is holding cold reading-style auditions Sept. 3 and 4 for two upcoming productions.

The first, which will run Oct. 18-27, is The Laramie Project. Written by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, its topic is the 1998 case of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old University of Wyoming student who was kidnapped, beaten, tied to a prairie fence and left to die, simply because he was gay. It comprises roles for 20 male and female performers, ages 16 and older.

Auditions will also take place for Cheaper by the Dozen, set to run Nov. 22-Dec. 8. Dramatized by Christopher Sergel from a book written by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, it is a comedy set in the 1920s and based on the real-life story of the Gilbreth family. A dozen children are growing up in a house headed by an "efficiency expert" father and a psychologist mother, which makes for some very interesting experiences. Roles are available for nine males and nine females, ages 8 to 70.

All auditions take place at 7 p.m. in the West Valley Campus Theatre, 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. Callbacks will be Sept. 5-6 in the same venue, with rehearsals beginning on Sept. 9. People interested in technical theater work are welcome to register during the auditions. For more information, call 408.741.2058.
