Drama group will perform 'Camelot'

The Saratoga Drama Group will perform the classic Lerner and Loewe musical Camelot from Sept. 14 through Oct. 12 at the Saratoga Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale Ave. The play is produced by Karen DeHart and directed and costumed by C. Westhope Presbyterian Church opens senior center

Westhope Presbyterian Church, 12850 Saratoga Ave., invites the community to attend an open house for its brand-new Senior Activities Center on Sept. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event includes a gourmet lunch (for a $2 donation) and a sampling of some of the center's activities, including music, crafts, games, discussion groups, exercise and a book club. Starting Sept. 9, the center will be open Mondays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organized and directed by Kathleen Stuart, the center is open to anyone 50 or older, regardless of religious affiliation. Stuart is the former director of the 40-year-old senior center at the Old First Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. At Westhope, she is working with a task force comprising Gay Nelson, Anne Campbell, Bence Nagy, Jeanne Stephens and Pastor John R. Bodo.

Macramé classes debut at Hakone

Among the creative, cultural and wellness programs it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way, will offer several macramé workshops this fall. The instructor is Irina Serbina of Sunnyvale, a macramé artist since the age of 12. She will teach participants how to create unique necklaces, bracelets, belts and other items by knotting different types of cords and incorporating stones, gems and beads into the patterns.

Beginners' workshops, suitable for children and adults, take place Sept. 21, noon to 3 p.m., and Sept. 26, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $50 per person, plus a variable materials fee.
