Cinderella and Prince Charming come to the stage Sept. 7 when Opera San José launches its 19th season with Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella). This version of the Charles Perrault fairy tale spins the story a little differently than the familiar tale of a glass slipper and pumpkin coach, but vain stepsisters, a noble maiden and a prince in search of a bride remain in this version with libretto by Jacopo Ferretti.
Alternating in the title role of Angelina are mezzo-sopranos Layna Chianakas and Michele Detwiler. Tenors Joshua La Force and Robert McPherson alternate as Don Ramiro, the prince.
Since education is a major ingredient in this company--from educational outreach in schools to the continuing training of the performers--there are numerous opportunities for opera buffs and novices alike to acquaint themselves with whatever opera is playing.
Previews are held on Tuesdays prior to each opening night. Wine and hors d'oeuvres are available beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by an hour-long session of information and singing. The preview for the current production takes place Sept. 3 in the Grand Ballroom of Hyatt Sainte Claire. The cost is $15.
Additionally, Insights, a free program, takes place prior to every performance--at 5:30 p.m. for 8 p.m. performances and 12:30 p.m. for 3 p.m. Sunday matinees. The one-hour sessions take place at the Montgomery Theater, where the performance also takes place. For those attending, there is time for dinner or lunch before the performance. But attending the show is not a requirement to attend. (see related story, page 20.)
"La Cenerentola (Cinderella)," in Italian with English supertitles, shows Sept. 729 at the Montgomery Theater, Market and San Carlos streets, San Jose. Season subscriptions are $140$212; single tickets are $48 and $58 for performances on Saturdays and Sundays, $40 and $48 for other nights.
