Several community events in Saratoga will mark the anniversary of last year's Sept. 11 tragedy.
St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and School will remember the more than 3,000 victims of the terrorist acts by reading all of their names throughout the day, beginning at a school chapel service at about 8:30 a.m. The church's rector, the Rev. Ernest Cockrell, said the ritual will continue after the service and for as long as it takes, until each name is read.
The church will also host an interfaith service in memory of the day and in the hope that such an event will never happen again. The service is being put on by the Saratoga Ministerial Association, which includes the leaders of all of Saratoga's faith communities. The association sponsored a similar event last Sept. 16. That event at Sacred Heart Church, Cockrell said, was attended by about 1,000 people, and the group expects a similar turnout this year.
Choirs from all area congregations have been invited to lead songs and can be accompanied by the Saratoga Symphony, he said. Troops of Boy Scouts will carry 20 banners printed with the names of those who died. Representatives of the Saratoga Fire District and the Santa Clara County Fire Department and Sheriff's Office have also been invited.
"We felt a need for the community to get together and remember this day and have the kind of vision that this will never happen again," Cockrell said. "We have to take some responsibility for our actions in the world, too. It's going to be, I think, a very emotional service."
The service begins at 7:30 p.m. at the church, located at 13601 Saratoga Ave., and should last 45 minutes to an hour.
The city of Saratoga will hold a flag-lowering ceremony at 8:46 a.m. in the civic center plaza. The event will be attended by Mayor Nick Streit and other council members, and refreshments will be served. Details of the program were still being determined at press time.
West Valley College is also holding events as part of its Sept. 11 Day of Remembrance, coordinated by the school's Associated Students organization. At 8:46 a.m., the school will observe a moment of silence as a Marine color guard raises the U.S. flag on the school's main flagpole by the admissions office. At 12:20 p.m. the school will hold a dedication ceremony for a memorial garden behind the student union.
The school is welcoming the community and families of the victims, including those of former West Valley students Nicole Miller and Mark Bingham, who both died on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
