It's back to school time, so drivers be careful
As our children return to school—reuniting with old friends and making new ones—we parents must deal with all the peripheral things such as our children's clothing styles (remember our styles in the '60s and '70s), alarm clocks, hair, lunches, homework, sports, etc. The last thing we want to worry about is the safety of our children on the streets of Saratoga.
So, as you drive to school each day, please remember Saratoga's founding fathers designed our neighborhoods around our schools so our children could safely walk or bike to school. But times have changed—today, instead of walking or biking to school, it's minivans and SUV's. I implore you to slow down and take extreme care through our school zones and neighborhoods! And, allow plenty of time to drop off your children safely before you commute to work or return home. I think you will agree that there is nothing more precious than the life of a child, whether it is yours or mine.
In addition, I want to take this opportunity to thank our street maintenance crews who, over the summer while most of Saratoga was peacefully sleeping at 5 a.m., quietly re-striped the city's crosswalks, intersections and school crossings so our children, seniors and all residents can safely navigate our streets whether by foot, bike or car.
Next time you see Jesus Villalobos, Sergio Serrano, Tony Fagiano, Tony Casale or Richard Amaro in their white city trucks and orange shirts, please thank them for taking pride in our streets and saving lives.
