Austin Way on the road to heritage
The city council on Sept. 4 voted to begin the process of designating Saratoga's only remaining brick road, Austin Way, south of SaratogaLos Gatos Road, a heritage lane.
The public will have another opportunity to comment on the proposed ordinance in a future public hearing before the council makes a final decision.
The planning commission voted to recommend approval of the ordinance at its July 24 meeting. At that meeting, some residents whose properties abut the road expressed concern about the heritage designation, particularly proposed additional city oversight of 10 feet of their private property. Residents continued to express those concerns at the Sept. 4 council meeting. However, the city has received more letters of support for the new designation than of opposition from nearby residents.
The council said it wanted more information about the cost of repairing the brick road and also expressed concern about the 10 feet of oversight of private property.
Skatepark thieves, items still at large
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office has still not located the items that were stolen Aug. 19 from the city's skatepark at its temporary location on Allendale Avenue. The culprits have also not been identified.
"The items will turn up eventually," said Deputy Ken Nelson. "It is just a matter of time." He said the office believes three or more individuals are involved in the theft of the 50-pound metal grind rail and 400-pound grind box.
