The Prospect Panthers hit the ground running in the 2002 football season ... literally.
The Panthers had two running backs combine for nearly 350 yards in last Friday night's 19-6 win over Harker Academy at PAL Stadium.
Jeremy Nuia raced for 191 yards on 16 carries and Steven Kong supported with 152 yards on 24 tries to lead the Panthers to the impressive season-opening victory.
Both Nuia and Kong scored touchdowns in the win. Nuia, whose longest run of the night was a 35-yard dash, scored from 19 yards out, and Kong, who's had a run of 19 yards in the game, scored on a 1-yard run.
Prospect struck for its third touchdown of the night through the air. Adam Day, who hit on 2 of 2 passes for 17 yards, hit Ted Piggins with a 12-yard touchdown strike.
Senior linebacker Austin Baumgarten was the tackling leader for the Panthers in the win. He was in on 10 tackles for Prospect, including a quarterback sack.
Trammell Staten was in on nine tackles in the Prospect victory, and Nuia, Jon Vela and Garrett Karren were in on five each.
Prospect, now 1-0 in the young season, will be on the road this week to visit Sequoia High School in Redwood City on Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
It will be the season opener for the Cherokees, who are coming off a 1-6-2 season a year ago. But Sequoia returns 21 seniors from last year's club.
Prospect, meanwhile, has already matched its win total of a year ago, when the Panthers posted a 1-9 record. Their only win came against Overfelt on the final day of the season.
