Rowing program

The Los Gatos Rowing Club will hold a fall introduction to rowing session for high school students interested in learning more about the sport. The session begins Oct. 5, 9 a.m., at the Los Gatos Rowing Club Boathouse at the Lexington Reservoir, and no sign-ups are necessary.

The fall session runs through Dec. 8 with practices on three weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $150. Interested rowers must be able to swim.

Quakes tryouts

The Silicon Valley Quakes, the South Bay area's longest uninterrupted traveling roller hockey program, will be holding its 2002­03 tryouts on Sept. 8 and 15 at Rollin Ice in San Jose.

The Quakes plan to field four teams the upcoming season--mites (birth years 1992, '93), squirts ('90, '91), peewees ('88, '89), and bantams ('86, '87).

Tryouts for mites and squirts will be held from 7 to 8:30 a.m., and tryouts for peewees and bantams will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The cost to try out is $5, and players should bring both a light and dark jersey to tryouts.

NJB registration

National Junior Basketball (NJB) Saratoga will be hold walk-in registration for new and returning players on Sept. 15, noon to 2 p.m., in the Saratoga High School gym.

NJB is a competitive basketball league for boys and girls in the first through eighth grades. Separate boys and girls divisions are offered for players in grades 3­8, and new this year are coed leagues for players in grades 1­2. The fee is $175 for the first player from a family and $150 each for each additional family member. Players must provide a copy of their PG&E bill for proof of residency.

NJB depends on volunteers. Parents are expected to volunteer for a job or choose a $100 buyout. Confidential scholarships are available for families who qualify.

Notre Dame golf

A golf tournament to benefit Notre Dame High School in San Jose will be holding Oct. 7 at The Villages Golf and Country Club in San Jose. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon.

The entry fee of $195 includes lunch, golf, contests, auctions, a cocktail party, dinner and an awards ceremony.

Golf tourney

The 20th annual Crime Stoppers of Silicon Valley golf tournament and

dinner auction will be held Sept. 16 at the La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos.

An entry fee of $170 includes golf with community and celebrity players, a golf cart, tee prizes, beverages, lunch and dinner. The cost is $40 for the dinner and auction only. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a putting contest at 10 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m., a shotgun start at noon and dinner at 6 p.m.

Masters swim

A masters swimming program for those age 19 and older is offered Monday through Thursday, 7­8 p.m., at the Los Gatos High School pool. The program features regular structured workouts for swimmers of all ability levels. The cost is $40 per month.
