It's time again for Coastal Cleanup

The Santa Clara Valley Water District and a host of other local organizations are inviting everyone this weekend to help clean up the county's waterways, including two creeks in Saratoga.

This year's Coastal Cleanup Day is Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon, and volunteers will be working on Calabazas Creek at Via Roncole and the Union Pacific railroad tracks, as well as on Wildcat Creek near Fruitvale and Allendale avenues, volunteers gathering at the civic center. Participants should wear long pants, sturdy shoes, hats and sunscreen and bring gloves to remove trash and debris from the waterways.

Highway 85 test set for October

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's project to test a microgrinding technique on a one-mile stretch of Highway 85, between Calabazas Creek in Cupertino and Kevin Moran Park in Saratoga, has been delayed from its scheduled August start date to October.

The project, which will determine if the newly ground road surface will sufficiently reduce roadway noise in the nearby neighborhoods, is still in the midst of plans for land closures and the removal of road sludge, according to Jeff Funk of the VTA's highway construction department. VTA has also not yet received its necessary permit for the project from Caltrans, he said.

VTA hopes work will begin by mid-October and be completed within two weeks, before the rainy season begins, Funk said.

Permit expired; owner can reapply

The city has expired the building permit for a property at 19020 Monte Vista Drive, after the owner failed to have the proper building inspection within a six-month time limit. The owner has the option of paying a fee and applying to have the permit reinstated.

Community development director Tom Sullivan said that the city's building official, Brad Lind, will be sending property owner Kathy Fyke a letter explaining to her the process of reinstating her permit. The residential property has been under construction for 51/2 years.
