Blankenship leads Westmont to win in opener
By Dick Sparrer
Tony Santos expected senior quarterback Bryen Blankenship to have a big year in 2002.

So when Blankenship came out of the gates firing the football last Friday night, the Westmont coach wasn't one bit surprised.

Blankenship threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Westmont to a season-opening 30-15 win over Fremont at Diesner Field in Sunnyvale on Sept. 13.

Blankenship, last year's junior of the year in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League , helped the Warriors open up a 20-13 halftime lead against the Firebirds, and they coasted from there to the victory.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback rambled 15 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, and senior running back Mike Jiosa scooted 11 yards for a score before the end of the period.

Westmont took a 14-6 lead into the second quarter, but upped that to 20-6 when Blankenship, who completed 12 passes for more than 150 yards, hit senior tight end Mike Bacciarelli for a TD.

Senior speedster Brian DeWitt hammered Fremont even harder when he returned the second half kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

Place kicker Amin Jahani closed out the scoring for Westmont with a 40-yard field goal in the final period.

Westmont will now take its 1-0 early season record up against Lincoln when the Warriors play their home opener on Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m.

Panthers fall

Prospect, a 19-6 winner over the Harker Academy in its season opener, dropped a 28-0 nod to Sequoia in non-league play last Friday night.

Jeremy Nuia led the offensive attack with 15 carries for 68 yards. Steven Kong supported with 34 yards on 10 tries.

Adam Day hooked up on 3 of 8 passes for 34 yards and was intercepted once. Joey Puccinelli caught two passes for nine yards and Kyilo Hulton had a grab for 25 yards.

Austin Baumgarten and Ted Piggins were the top tacklers for the Panthers. Baumgarten starred defensively with 11 tackles, a quarterback sack and two fumble recoveries. Piggins was in on 10 tackles.

Nuia finished with five tackles for the Panthers, and James Ledger, Garrett Karren, Steve Sullivan, Trammell Staten and Marcus Laffen were in on four tackles each. Ruben Lee added a quarterback sack.

Falcons in action

Saratoga will be back in action this week after taking last week off. The Falcons, who opened the year with a 41-21 win over Capuchino, will face a tough test when they visit Mountain View on Sept. 20, 3:15 p.m. The Spartans are coming off a 26-7 non-league win over Willow Glen last Friday.
