Abstract paintings come to Montalvo
A"High and Low, Fast and Slow" is the title of an exhibit being installed at the Montalvo Gallery, set to open on Sept. 22 and continue through Nov. 10. It comprises abstract paintings by Chicago-based artist John Phillips, whose style is noted for bright, flat colors, bold lines and networks of tubes and kidney shapes.
A collector of 1950s rhythm and blues music and an admirer of pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Phillips says, "My work is about attitude, attempting to embrace simultaneously both high and low culture."
An artist's reception, with refreshments, takes place Sept. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. Phillips will speak at 2:30 p.m. The Montalvo Gallery is at 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga.
