Donations help PAL Center

The Saratoga High School Foundation received two cash donations several weeks ago from donors who prefer to remain anonymous. The two gifts—the largest in the foundation's two-year history—totaled $500,000 and were donated for the Performing Arts and Lecture (PAL) Center fund.

The PAL Center is a proposed state-of-the-art theater that would house 600 seats, a proscenium-style stage and an orchestra pit. Saratoga High does not have a theater. The school has also stated that the community will be able to use the facility when it is not in use by high school students.

The center has been approved by the state architect's office and now awaits November bond measures to fully allow plans to begin. Estimated costs are upwards of $7 million. Currently the foundation has raised $5.3 toward construction costs.

Encouraging teens to read

Saratoga Mayor Nick Streit has declared Oct. 13 through 19 as Teen Read Week.

The program is aimed at encouraging teenagers to "Take Time to Read, for the Fun of It!"

The week will begin with the Saratoga Library teen librarian and children's librarian holding a book talk at Redwood Middle School. Teens are encouraged to read one book and write a review for the celebration week. Doing so will allow them to participate in a raffle sponsored by the Friends of Saratoga Libraries.

Teen Read Week has its own website, www.ala.org/yalsa, which lists suggested books for teenage readers.
